Tucson’s Chef Abel to Go on Hiatus

TUCSON, AZ (October 15, 2019) — Chef Abel will be hanging up his chef’s hat for a while. 

Abel Ramos, the 12-year-old Tucson entrepreneur behind Chef Abel’s Tortillas, announced today that he will be taking a break from tortilla-making to focus on his schoolwork and retool his business. 

“Chef Abel has been so blessed with the positive impact from customers and from those in the industry since his launch last year,” said Sandra Robles, Abel’s grandmother.

She added, however, that Abel needed some time to focus on the challenges that came with transforming a small summer project into a major business endeavor. 

In particular, she said, Abel is hoping to relaunch his business with better equipment and a better space. “His Nana wants her kitchen back,” she added with a smile. 

Chef Abel’s Tortillas was founded as a summer project in the summer of 2018, when Abel was 10. After a slow start, the small tortilla business took off as a result of the enthusiastic reaction to Abel’s heirloom tortillas, based on his great-great-grandmother’s recipe. 

The tortillas are prepared by hand using stone-ground white Sonoran wheat, a local ancient grain first brought to Arizona centuries ago by Father Kino. White Sonoran wheat was used to make the first flour tortillas. 

Now in the sixth grade, Abel is facing the challenge of balancing school with the growing demand for his tortillas. He is hoping that larger commercial equipment such as a larger mixer will allow him to produce bigger batches of tortillas in a shorter period of time, allowing him to keep up with orders. 

Abel and his family are planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign soon to help them with the costs of upgrading their kitchen equipment.
